Roots

There is no art without an artist, just as there is no artist without what inspired him to create. What relentless legacy sows ideas in the soul? What insanity is driving him to act on them? And, perhaps the most important question of all, what are its roots?

In search of an answer, we decided to get in the car and go back in time. The soul led us, so we ended up exactly where we needed to be. We knocked on old doors and promised to listen to what they had to say. And they opened. They taught us that life is art and poetry and that “today” always becomes “yesterday”. They told us to remember to paint and, most importantly, to never stop dreaming.

This is how the Poema Română collection was born, out of respect for roots and love for beauty. We see the return to traditions as a welcome breath of fresh air and have felt the call to rediscover them. Let’s harness and reinvent them. In this sense, as elements of inspiration, the collection unfolds along three syncretic directions, carefully woven into the fabric of our cultural heritage.

Tradition

We have enriched the collection with patterns inspired by traditional fabrics that we still find, in pride of place, in areas full of history in Romania. Authentic and eternal folkloric creations, customarily handed down from one generation to the next. Thus, we made paintings and then carpets from which the highest threshold of delicacy transpires, inspired by borangic marbles embroidered with silk thread, created with so much care and skill by Romanian artisans. We admired and studied ii, belts, rugs and towels, unique hand-woven patterns with geometric, structured details that stylize natural elements.

The Poema Română collection includes rugs whose story features the Tree of Life, a motif with universal resonance, found on fabrics, decorative objects or pieces of clothing throughout European and Asian culture. In our area, it can be seen especially on the Oltenian carpets and on the Moldavian belt. The motif symbolises the link between life and death, its crown representing the celestial plane, while the roots belong to the telluric.

Because one of our desires is to bring beauty and magic into people’s homes, we have chosen, through the Romanian Poem, to praise the folk painters who have approached works in the style of naive art. The explicit values towards magical realism and towards a frugal and primitive stylistic horizon, in communion with traditional Romanian symbols, inspired us to create models such as Love from the Carpathians or Upturned Ornament. The inclusion of mythical and folkloric motifs (flight, dreams, harmony between man and nature), as well as a personal and exposed style, were the conceptual foundation behind this direction.

We stopped in the Bucovina area, Gura Humorului and Câmpulung Moldovenesc for an incursion into the world of paintings found in the monasteries of the area. We have delighted our eyes with the frescoes painted by Nicolae Grigorescu at the Agapia Monastery, whose realistic and humanized secularist style is in line with the compositions of famous Renaissance painters, without losing its uniqueness and personal strength.

Voroneț Monastery, also known as the “Sistine Chapel of the East” is another area of inspiration for the Romanian Poem. Here we sipped from the famous Voroneti blue and enjoyed the exterior painting done on a high artistic level, with biblical figures so natural and inspiring. We admired the frescoes in which folkloric elements are introduced, such as archangels blowing in the bushes and the 12 signs of the zodiac.

The decorative elements that we find in both churches and monasteries are another area of interest from which we drew inspiration; whether we are talking about friezes or arches separated by plaster brise-soleils or ornate anchorages with floral and vegetal motifs.

Going further on the religious, mystical and spiritual foundation of Romanian folklore, the Merry Cemetery in Săpânța includes all the above elements. Also decorated in the style of the Naive Art, the crosses are dressed with rich ornamentation, playful details, characteristic of the Maramureșean style. The chromatic combinations are also unique in the way and context in which they were used. The essence of this universe, an intrinsic part of the Romanian spiritual heritage, is irony. Sometimes gentle, sometimes biting, sometimes directed at others, sometimes at oneself, the irony in the face of one’s own death is as much a paradigm shift as it is a return to one’s origins. The epitaphs made contain notes of wholesome, knowing humour about the lives of those who are no more, and sometimes about the reason for their death.

Celebrating life, even when it is over, is what we choose to bring, symbolically, into our creations. Courage, joy, playfulness and playfulness are combined and transpire, one by one, in the different, overlapping and combined textures of the tapestries in the Poema Română collection. We have thus tried to capture the feeling and make it our own, to calibrate it to the present moment and render it against a background of cerulean or ultramarine blue.

English Poem

The Romanian Poem Collection graphically encapsulates the Romanian spirit of steadfastness, evolution and surprise. It sets off, bold and fluid, on a foray through time. He thus arrives in ancient lands, where the real and the mythical are intertwined and confused, where life and death dance together. Our creations masterfully weave together the same eternal elements, bringing together the old and the new, the absurd and the concrete, the traditional and the modern. The roots of creation, deep in the earth beneath us, encourage us to explore the cultural heritage passed down from generation to generation. At the heart of our tapestries, the focal point is tradition, in all its fullness.

So, after loading ourselves up with beauty, we returned home with our quiver full of inspiration and our souls ready to create. We set out to take elements from Romanian grammar, costume and customs and render them in a modern and bold form, through overlapping textures and patterns, with surprising touches of neon and graffiti.

The stories of our tapestries come to life through both the traditional method of oil or acrylic painting and the modern method of drawing on a graphic tablet. Because we are versatile, we offer customers the option to order custom wallpaper: we can draw and materialise the design they imagine. In addition, we provide our customers with 3 materials, with 3 different textures. Each person who crosses our threshold can choose their material according to their budget or the effect they want to achieve: whether it’s the smooth texture, matt and soft to the touch, the canvas texture, like a painting canvas, or the linen texture, especially used by those who want to give the feeling of a wall covered in linen fabric. These features go beyond the strictly decorative function of the wallpaper, offering a new dimension that can be experienced sensorially, through touch, look, the tints and texture used.

Also, because we respect, love and honour nature not only through the patterns we paint, all the materials used to make the tapestries are completely eco-friendly and recyclable.
